Typical Milestones:
3 Months Old: reacting to sounds, turning toward bright light, recognizing parents’ voices, reaching for hair or toys, lifting head and/or shoulders while on stomach 6 Months Old: reaching for and picking up toys, responding to name, holding bottle, recognizing family members’ faces, sitting up and leaning forward on hands 12 Months Old: using simple words, playing games like peek-a-boo, crawling, walking while supported 24 Months Old: using two or more words together to form simple sentences, feeding self with spoon, recognizing parts of face, showing affection for family members 36 Months Old: using three to five word sentences, playing with other children, alternating feet while walking up step, dressing self |
EARLY INTERVENTION
During the children’s participation in our Early Childhood Education Program, our educator may identify developmental delays or needs for early intervention services. If our educators identify a developmental delay in a child, they may refer him/her to an Early Intervention Team and ensure that the child is evaluated and tested for detected symptom to provide an accurate diagnosis and therapeutic regimen. The Early Intervention Team further assesses the child’s specific needs through Multidisciplinary Evaluation and implements an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The appropriate therapists may come to work with the child while he/she is participating in regular classroom activities as well as in the home or in other agency settings.
Children, especially those experiencing homelessness, may require:
- speech therapy: used for language and communication delays; focuses on speech, language, oropharyngeal, and cognitive factors in communication
- occupational therapy: aimed at addressing developmental delays associated with cognitive, motor, sensory, play skills, and communication
- physical therapy: includes therapy for gross motor delays and physical development
- behavioral health therapy: can be made available for children as well as their family in individual or group settings
- vision therapy: physical therapy for the eyes to address problems such as lazy eye, double vision, or crossed eyes
INFANT MENTAL HEALTH
Jardin de los Niños is designated as a trauma-informed care center by the New Mexico Association for Infant Mental Health (NMAIMH). To maintain this designation, Jardin’s professional development focuses on trauma-informed care and infant mental health and staff completes the required expectations to maintain NMAIMH Endorsement.
BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES
Through a partnership with Families & Youth Inc., Jardin de los Niños provides on-site behavioral health services for our children and families. We value the development of the whole child and the whole family. We believe in providing access to behavioral health services to all of our children and families.
